Marlis Petersen, Max Emanuel Cencic & Christophe Dumaux Headline Theater An Der Wien’s 2018-19 Season
By Francisco SalazarThe Theater an der Wien has announced its 2018-19 season, featuring numerous operas by Weber, Handel, and Tchaikovsky.
The season will include a number of productions, concert performances, recitals and chamber operas.
Productions
Marlis Petersen, David Hansen, Mirella Hagen, Katarina Bradić, Rainer Trost, Florian Köfler, and Tölzer Sängerknabe star in a production of Handel’s “Alcina.” Stefan Gottfried conducts Tatjana Gürbaca’s production.
Performance Dates: Sept. 15-26, 2018
Torsten Fischer’s directs a new production of Rossini’s “Guillaume Tell” with John Osborn, Christoph Pohl, and Jane Archibald starring. Diego Matheuz conducts.
Performance Dates: Oct. 13-27, 2018
René Jacobs conducts a production of Handel’s “Teseo” by Moshe Lesier and Patrice Caurier. Gaëlle Arquez and Christophe Dumaux star.
Performance Dates: Nov. 14-25, 2018
Weber’s “Euryanthe” gets a new production by Christof Loy with Jacquelyn Wagner, Norman Reinhardt, and Andrew Foster-Williams.
Performance Dates: Dec. 12-31, 2018
Tchaikovsky’s “The Maid of Orleans” is set to star Oksana Volkova with Willard White and Dmitry Golovnin. Lotte de Beer directs a production by Oksana Lyniv.
The season concludes with Weber’s “Oberon” starring Annette Dasch, Mauro Peter, and Vincent Wolfsteiner. Nikolaus Habjan directs while Thomas Guggeis conducts.
Vinci’s “Gismondo, re di Polonia” gets a rare performance with Max Emanuel Cencic starring. Yuriy Mynenko, Aleksandra Kubas-Kruk, Dilyara Idrisova, and Sophie Juncker also star. Martyna Pastuszka conducts.
Franco Fagioli stars in the title role of Handel’s “Serse” alongside Vivica Genaux, Francesca Aspromonte, Inga Kalna, and Delphine Galou. Maxim Emelyanychev conducts il pomo d’oro.
Salieri’s “Tarare” gets one performance with Jean-Sébastien Bou, Karine Deshayes, Cyrille Dubois, and Tassis Christoyannis. Christophe Rousset conducts.
Weber’s “Peter Schmoll” takes the stage with Roberto Paternostro conducting the rare work. Paul Armin Edelmann takes on the title role with Thorsten Grümbel, Jenna Siladie, and Sebastian Kohlhepp.
Aleksei Isayev takes the title role in Tchaikovsky’s “Mazeppa” with Olga Tolkmit and Igor Morozov. Eugeny Brazhnik conducts Orchester und Chor der Helikon Oper Moskau.
Elena Mikhailenko takes the title role in Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta” and “Undine.” Eugeny Brazhnik conducts.
Tuomas Katajala and Johanni van Oostrum star in Weber’s “Der Freischütz” with Laurence Equilbey conducting the Insula Orchestra.
Max Emanuel Cencic, Ruxandra Donose, Julia Lezhneva, and Pavel Kudinov star in Handel’s “Orlando Furioso.” George Petrou conducts.
Filippo Mineccia sings the title role in Handel’s “Rinaldo” with Dara Savinova, Ekaterina Bakanova, Eric Jurenas, and Riccardo Novaro.

Recital
Elizabeth Kulman performs a recital with music by Georges Bizet, Cole Porter, Benjamin Britten, Franz Schubert, W. A. Mozart, Richard Wagner, Kurt Weill, Giuseppe Verdi, and Richard Strauss.
Kammeroper
The season will also include a number of chamber operas including “Die Zauberinsel,” “Krieg und Frieden,” “Candide,” “Don Carlos,” and “L’Enfant/Olympia.”
