Opera Praktikos to present ‘There Will Be Cake!’

By Francisco Salazar

Opera Prakitkos is set to present “There Will Be Cake!”

The production will be presented on Dec. 12, 13, and 14, 2024, and will be a site-specific musical drama pairing two mono-operas, “Bon Appetit!” By Lee Hoiby, Julia Child & Mark Shulgasser and “Fluffernutter” by Spicer Carr & Marianna Mott Newirth.

The productions will be staged by Gwynn MacDonald with music direction by Calvin Hitchcock. Meanwhile, Shanley Horvitz will star as Sarah Karmichael while Hailey McAvoy will take on the role of Julia Child.

“Two slices of Americana to perk up any jaded New Yorker’s palette: that ineffable cook Julia Child makes a French chocolate cake; and a tasty New England staple reminds us that aging is hard,” noted Greg Moomjy, musicologist and co-founder/artistic director of OPrak, who has Cerebral Palsy and is a wheelchair user, in an official press release. “When assembling this program, we wanted to give audiences small samplings of comic opera performed by top-notch singers at an accessible venue. And, yes, we will also serve cake!”

Performances will be held at Asylum NYC.

Opera Praktikos was established in 2021 and is New York City’s pioneering disability-affirmative opera company. The company’s mission is to make opera an inclusive and accessible art form for audiences and artists alike.
