‘Both Eyes Open’ Heads to Zellerbach Playhouse This February

The Zellerbach Playhouse in Berkeley, CA will host a new production of Max Giteck Duykers and Philip Kan Gotanda’s “Both Eyes Open” on Feb. 15 and 16, 2025.

The opera spotlights the suffering of the Japanese American incarceration during World War II on U.S. soil. The work is directed by Melissa Weaver and conducted by David Milnes. Baritone Suchan Kim, soprano Zen Wu, tenor John Kun Park, and Eco Ensemble headline the performances.

The performance on the 15 starts at 8 p.m. with the one on the 16 set for 2 p.m.

The performances of “Both Eyes Open” are supported by the UC Berkeley Japanese American Studies Advisory Committee, a Mellon Project Grant from the Division of Arts & Humanities Dean’s Office, Cal Performances, UC Berkeley Department of Music, UC Berkeley Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, Center for Japanese Studies, Townsend Center for the Humanities, the California Civil Liberties Program, and through the generous support of Jerome and Thao Dodson.
